Cop (COPS)
"Cop" or "COPS" is often used as an acronym for "Community Oriented Policing Services". This is a philosophy that promotes organizational strategies that support the systematic use of partnerships and problem-solving techniques to proactively address the immediate conditions that give rise to public safety issues such as crime, social disorder, and fear of crime. It is also the name of a grant program run by the U.S. Department of Justice to advance this style of policing. However, "cop" is also commonly used as a term for police officer. The term comes from an abbreviation of "constable on patrol" and is used in a number of countries to refer to an individual who enforces the laws and maintains order.
